What happens during the service

Your stylist will start by sectioning your hair into three equal strands at the crown or chosen starting point, then cross the side strands over the middle while picking up new hair from each side as the braid progresses. Once all your hair is incorporated, the plait continues as a standard three-strand braid and is secured with an elastic. The whole process takes around 15 minutes, and finishing spray or smoothing product is used to keep everything neat and controlled.

Who it suits

French plaits work brilliantly if you have:

• Enough length to form and secure the braid neatly
• Hair that's detangled and dry before you arrive (it makes the styling smoother and quicker)
• A preference for a style that's secure, even, and close to the head rather than loose and voluminous

If your hair is very slippery, layered, or thick, the team may use a bit of extra product or take a little longer to make sure the plait holds beautifully. The final look depends on whether you prefer it tight and polished or softer and fuller — just let your stylist know.

Keeping it looking good

French plaits are low-maintenance, but a little gentle handling goes a long way:

• Avoid rough brushing while the braid is in
• When you're ready to take it out, remove the elastic carefully to avoid snagging
• If flyaways pop up during the day, smooth them down with a tiny bit of product or water
• Because finishing spray is used, you may want to wash your hair as usual later to remove any buildup

The tighter the braid, the longer it tends to last — a well-done French plait can easily hold its shape all day (or longer, if you're gentle with it overnight).
